Full Moon 101 – Ritual, Sleep, Sex {+Calendar 2020}

If you have already read my post on the New Moon Ritual then you know how passionate I am about this topic. Including a full moon ritual in my spiritual practice has been a beautiful experience so far and I am still reaping the benefits from it.

All in all, what we do is using the Moon’s power as a timer in different stages of the month. A stage to release, a stage to set intentions or a stage to put in the work and/or have fun.

In this article, I show you how to create a Full Moon ritual, and how the Full Moon affects many aspects of our lives.

During the Full moon, the moon is at its highest peak of power, hence why it is important to take advantage of this time.

The Full Moon favors forgiveness and gratitude.

It is best during this time to free ourselves of negative emotions and cultivate positive ones.

full moon ritual

Full moons have always been a sacred moment of connection with my divine feminine. Although New moons are defined by the beginning of a new phase in our lives, Full Moons represent the highest peak of energy and power. In other words :

  • Celebration,
  • Achievement,
  • Fruition,

To open the path of a brand new cycle. We can help in cultivating this high energy by creating small rituals.

1. Full moon writing ritual

During the Full Moon, emotions are multiplied, so a great thing to do is to express how we feel with no restraint.

For instance, an easy ritual is to write down uncensored feelings on small pieces of paper. Write down everything you feel in your heart that you have been holding for the past month. Your questions, your fears, your frustrations, etc..

Once this is done, burn them.

Since there is a correlation between writing and feeling our emotions, it is best to put our phones aside for once, take a piece of paper and write. Furthermore, the act of burning is an amazing way to tell our brain that this specific emotion is now gone.

After that, you can set the intention : “I let go and release all that does not serve me and allow me to move on”.

2. Clear the energy with white Sage

This is a powerful purification ritual which helps to clear dark and negative energies.

After burning your notes, burn some Sage (or Palo Santo) to clean your space.

Place the Sage on a small plate to avoid dropping ashes on the floor, and direct the smoke towards the ceiling and corners of your rooms.

Avoid burning sage too close to your curtains, pets, or any flammable fabric.

Make sure you open your windows to let a clear new energy in your home.

3. Charge your spiritual items

The full moonlight intensifies all energies. This is why during this time it is prolific to charge and cleanse all your crystals, essential oils, singing bowls, or all other items with spiritual value.

To charge them, set an intention on each item and place them near a window so it is kept under the moonlight. In the morning, preferably before sunrise, remove your crystals.

4. Full Moon bath ritual

If you are lucky enough to live near a clean lake or ocean, jumping into one on a full moon night is a very powerful ritual.

Your whole body and being is directly exposed to the Moon and you are one with 3 powerful elements: Earth, Air, and Water.  A beautiful way to thank Mother Nature.

Alternatively, taking a bath at home is a great ritual too (especially in the winter haha).

Lay down in warm water, light candles or incense and try to visualise the moon while in the bath.

Visualise your body, your mind, your soul, and your heart absorbing the Full moon rays.

Unlike the Sun which elevates and energises us, the Moon raises our intuition and calms our nerves

It is also a good time to make decisions so that you are ready to put them into action and manifest them during the New Moon.

Note: If you are looking for Full Moon kits, I am an absolute fan of Etsy and I recommend getting their kits which includes candles, crystals, a journal, and sage all in one box. I particularly love THIS ONE.

Does the Full Moon affect our sleep ?

According to a study made by scientists from Basel University in Switzerland, there is a chance the Moon affects our sleep.

The study showed that during the Full Moon, volunteers took longer to fall asleep, slept 20 minutes less, and spent 30% less time in deep sleep. The volunteers were not informed of the purpose of the study and could not see the Moon.

Another study showed that the Full Moon reduces children’s sleep by 5 minutes, but do no affect their behaviors or ability to recover.

Researchers from Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute have gathered data from 12 countries which provided 3 million hours of sleep.

This study has allowed to observe 5900 children aged between 9 to 11 years old around the world.

The researchers have compared the children’s level of activity over 3 days during :

  • The Full Moon,
  • The New Moon,
  • And Third quarter.

Well, the study did not show a significant change in behaviour during the Full Moon or lack of sleep.

Natural ways to sleep better during the full moon ?

Sure, it might not scientifically be proven that the Full Moon affects our sleep but if you are lunar-sensitive, like me, then it might still happen.

I’m sure you guessed it, but to have a healthy lifestyle will help tremendously.

  • Avoid sweets, white carbs, and fatty foods as much as you can. I know it’s not always easy but also try to avoid gluten since it disturbs our digestive system.
  • Place blackout blinds and curtains in all the bedrooms.
  •  Try to maintain a cool temperature in your bedroom at night (ideally below 20°C/ 68°F).
  • Create your own sleep routine and go to bed at the same time every night. Avoid being exposed to blue lights (laptops, smartphones..), at least one hour before going to bed.
  • Use your bed only to sleep (not to watch TV) and go to bed when you are tired only.
  • Meditate before bed.

If you are lunar sensitive, Full Moon nights can make you feel irritated and stressed, and there are ways to help.

1 – Valerian root

Valerian root is known to be a natural sedative. This root helps to relax before a restful sleep.

How to use it ?

  • Infused: 1 teaspoon per cup of tea. Bring to boil for 3 minutes, then let it cool down and infuse for 10 minutes. Drink one cup during the day and one just before bed.
  • Capsule: 1 capsule an hour before bed should be enough but always check the instructions at the back of the box.

2 – Lavender essential oil

Lavender Essential oil is by far my favorite method to relax and sleep deep. It works wonderful !

How to use it ?

  • Place a few drops on your pillow and let it dry. If the smell is a bit too strong for you, place the drops on your bedsheets instead.
  • Place 2 drops on a tissue and breathe it in before bed.
  • Mix 6 drops of lavender essential oil with your favorite oil and massage your solar plexus area, your wrists, the bottom of your feet, and your forehead.
  • Or add 3 drops in your bath with Epsom salt.

3 – Rose quartz

Rose Quartz is known to bring serenity, lower anxiety, and ease to a better sleep. This powerful crystal is the symbol of love, re-energize, and soften our emotions.

How to use it ?

You can place your rose quartz crystal under your pillow.

If you are lunar sensitive

  • Minimize the amount of alcohol intake and drink herbal teas (jasmine is great) instead.
  • Stop any activity (work, reading, ..) one hour before bed.
  • Eat a light dinner.
  • The Full Moon favors our body detoxification so we can use it or a fast/juice cleanse for a day.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Eat foods full of melatonin such as ginger, rice, bananas, nuts, and potatoes…
  • Exercise.

According to a study held by a famous dating app, the Full Moon would have an influence on our willingness to seduce and our libido.

During this period, men and women’s behaviours would be dictated by the Moon.

What was it based on?

Well, it seems the number of subscriptions would rise on Full Moon nights.

Furthermore, the number of messages sent would also reach a peak on these special nights.

3 Reasons to get your freak on a Full Moon night

After sleep, it seems the Moon would also have an impact on our sex life. Crazy huh ?

Well, considering the Moon would affect our emotions and moods, why not our libido !

1 – It intensifies our senses

YES! The Full Moon intensifies our senses. Indeed, Venus and the Moon are both known to have an influence on our love life. Venus rises our feelings, while the Moon rises other things if you know what I mean..

2 – Benefit of the doubt

Myth or reality? For generations, the masses wondered if the Moon really had an effect on our lives. And whether you believe or not, I like to think placebo effects can play a big role in some beliefs. Why not play with this myth and reap the benefits from it. Your sex life might take a whole new turn. In other words, if you believe it, it will help.

3 – Because we can’t sleep

Remember what that study said. The Full Moon might decrease our sleep by 5 minutes. You might as well utilize this time with other fun activities…

I think it’s fair to say that the Moon fascinates us as much as it intrigues us. Whether it has an effect on people or not, if you are following a spiritual path and wondering if you should include Astrology into the mix, I would say GO FOR IT.

The moon is the divine feminine, it is reassuring, calming, and protective. It can only help you on your journey to reach a higher consciousness. These are obviously my views only but I would love to know if you have put in place a sacred ritual on a Full Moon night or if it affects you?

Don’t forget to download my Free Full Moon journal to help you track the actions you need to let go off.
